Kedai Kopi & Makan Fui Lau

[Non-Halal]

This simple looking coffee shop is located in Buhavan Square in Donggongon, Penampang. If it wasn't for my colleague, I would have never ventured to this shop.

Simple menu on the wall. Apparently the Asam Pedas was famous so that's what I ordered :)

Like any noodles dishes, you can have either noodles, vermicelli or flat rice noodles (koay tiaw). Then you can have it either dry tossed in soya sauce mix (kon lau) or included in the soup.

The soup is not as thick but still yellowish like curry. As the name of the dish suggest, "Asam" means sour, and "Pedas" means hot, or spicy. There is sour and heat, just nice for me. For people who like more heat, can put in a special request to the cook ;)

You can have your bowl of soup with either pork slices or fish slices. I would highly recommend it with fish because fish goes well with Asam Pedas. There will also be the odd tomato chunks and French bean in the soup.

The Retro Club

[Serve No Pork]

Authentic American Cuisine in Authentic American Portions.

That is the tag line on their menu. And they are not kidding about it. In general, they serve hearty meals; from finger food, soups, salads, mains that are categorized into beef, chicken, lamb and seafood, homey sides, sandwiches, pasta, desserts, and as well as a menu for the kiddos.

Located in KK Times Square, I like the cozy environment of the restaurant, plus their staff were well trained in terms of their menu knowledge as well as wine selections.

Fair selection of beverages

Framed pictures and memorabilia on the wall gives a very cozy and homey feeling.

Jambalaya, potato wedges, garden salad and V.O.D; vegetable of the day which is seasonal vegetables sautéed in butter. Nothing fancy, just plain hearty.

Fresh salad, sautéed vegetables and crispy wedges.

Jambalaya, sautéed vegetables, fat fries and dirty rice.

Skynyrd's Southern Fried Chicken with wedges, sautéed vegetables and dirty rice. YUM!

Overall, food was delish, portion was good and service was commendable. I will be back.

Grill'z Kitchen

[Non-Halal]

A new restaurant opened it's doors not too long ago, in a new area shop lots; Kepayan Point. I've seen many of it's advertisements either on newspaper or on buntings all over town. So I decided to bring the whole family and give it a try.

One thing that I am glad I did was making reservations. Being a new place, it was packed. This is the typical KK crowd; new place opens up, the crowd will be there.

It's a grill house; ribs, steaks, pastas, pizzas, the lot! Their menu starts with salads, grilled vegetables, bruschetta, oysters and soups as their Starters and Appetizers.

Their main course comprises of grilled, fried or braised meats and seafood. They also have a selection of pasta, pizza, burger as well as snacks/finger food.

Not forgetting their decent range of drinks; from hot to cold, healthy to alcoholic.

Zuppa Di Mare

Chicken Caesar Salad

Grilled Mushroom

 Pork Back Ribs

Lamb Shank

Italian Pork Chop

Pork Cutlets

Mackerel Fish and Chips

Overall, the food tasted good. The only thing that needed improvement was the staff management, I guess they were not ready for the huge crowd.

Anyhow, I see potential in this place. Will be back for more.

Ramadan Bazaar @ Lok Kawi Army Camp

[Halal]

Ramadan is (according to Wikipedia) the ninth month of the Islamic calendar; Muslims worldwide observe this as a month of fasting from dawn until sunset. Food and drink is served daily, before sunrise and after sunset.

With this, there are plenty bazaar starting in the afternoon to late evening, that sells food and drinks to break fast with. There are many different types of food, mostly Malay Cuisine. One thing I love is the Kuih (Malay cakes).

For years, I have been visiting such bazaars, hunting for the best Kuih in town. This year has not been fruitful because it started off with me being under the weather. When I am finally well and fit, it is already towards the end of Ramadan. So I have asked around, which is the best bazaar. One of the recommended ones is this in Lok Kawi.

Lok Kawi is a army base camp. It is said that because the people in the army are from all over Malaysia, thus the food sold in the bazaar are made by people from all over Malaysia, which would be slightly different than those made by the locals.

Off we go!

We managed to get some Kuih, they indeed tasted... YUMMY!

Pulut Panggang (grilled glutinous rice with spicy coconut flakes, wrapped in banana leaves)

Lepat Pisang & Lepat Ubi (steamed banana paste & steamed cassava paste wrapped in banana leaves)

I am definitely going to do this again before the end of Ramadan. Now where's the next best bazaar?

Tako Japanese Restaurant

[Serve No Pork]

Sunday dinner with Hub, as well as a special day, we decided to try out a new place.

The place was quite busy, when we arrived at 7.30pm, there were only 2 small tables available. Luckily it was only the 2 of us, just nice.

Going through the menu, I realized that they are running their salmon promotion. Without second thoughts, I ordered their Salmon Belly Sashimi. And it was delicious!
The fat distribution was quite even thus making this huge piece of salmon belly sashimi melts in my mouth.

Torikatsu Noodle Set. Springy noodle soup and chicken chop with egg on rice.

Sushi set. The ingredients are all so fresh and I must say this, the rice did not fall apart! Ashamed to say, we do get a lot of sushi in KK which the rice will fall apart upon picked up by chopstick.

Sushi belt; priced by the colour of the plate.

This is a place that I do not mind returning.

Hiatus...

Hi all! If only you have noticed the timeline of my previous blog posts, it has been a long time ever since.

This is because I have hopped over to Facebook and continued posting at https://www.facebook.com/pages/What-To-Eat-Leh-by-Lina-T/321018498021328

And now I am back.

I have to admit, posting pictures in FB is pretty easy, and it was very easy for my friends to view them. However, I can't express myself properly as I did here. Thus, I am moving back ;)

Apologies for inconvenience, but it's all for the better.

Please do drop by more often :)
